I have been rather quiet here the past months, not only because of typical winter fog in our area but also due to our remote observatory project that absorbed quite some time and that I like to present here on behalf of our team for the first time.
Who is our team - many of you will know the names listed here:
Philipp Keller - specialist in designing and building mid aperture telescopes and observatories worldwide, developer of ASAs autoslew software and dedicated lover of dark skies
Volker Wendel - well known astrophotographer for many years, member of spiegelteam in cooperation with
Bernd Flach-Wilken also experienced astrophotographer for many years, I met him in Namibia the first time years ago.
Konstantin Buchhold, also experienced astrophotographer and IT specialist
and myself
We have driven this project since 2007 until we experienced first light in November last year at CTIO in Chile.
We installed a 32" corrected cassegrain designed from Philipp with his equatorial direct drive fork mount housed in a 5 m dome.
From November till mid of February we had the site closed due to a hardware failure.
As the number of clear night in Chile is extremely high, the productivity of the telescope since the time of reactivation is enormous.
We have set up a new common homepage at:
http://chart32.deThere you find some information about the site and our collaboration project and our first light images so far. We experienced very good seeing conditions, typical close below 1 arcsec, in best cases down to 0.6 arcsec.
I held a presentation at CEDIC this March, that will give you more detailed comprehensive information about technics, the site, the team and about the project history at this link:
http://panther-observatory.com/tips/Chart32_CEDIC.pdfWe all are very happy with this installation and like to share the first results produced from there with you, you will find them at our chart32 homepage in full resolution.
