I got a call today that a Skywatcher ED120 f/7.5 was available to do some testing on if I was interested. I showed up and we tested the scope on some bright glints on a electrical insolator at high power. Results showed in comparison to my ED80 and ED100 scopes the ED120 showed a much more abundant degree of ca splilling in and around the image. Actually the level of false color was a little surprising to me since I was expected much better performance from this scope. Just for reference the collimation was dead on in the ED120. My ED100 at 360 power on a similar daytime test object shows no false color on the artificial star or around it or around dark objects against a bright sky which are ca free. The level of ca in the ED120 at similar magnifications showed in my opinion a abundant amount of false color in direct comparison to the ED100. Just my honest impressions of the optics on this latest larger ED scope from Synta at least in regard to color correction for a scope to be marketed as a apo.
e ancora:
ED-120: I did the simple calcuation and estimated that to have the same level of color correction and using the same design, an ED-100 would have to be F9.4, an ED-120 would have F11.25.
At F9, the ED-100 is pretty much right there but I think they must have figured a 120mm F11.25 with a 53 inch OTA would just not be a big seller so they kept the focal length the same as the ED-100. It is pretty obvious that one cannot do that and use the same design and get the same level of color correction.
I wonder-if/doubt-that Orion will market this scope...
Mi sembra abbastanza chiaro, magari possiamo ragionare sul rapporto prestazioni/prezzo, ma probabilmente non è allo stesso livello dei suoi fratellini .
