Trojan asteroids1 are a class of co-orbiting objects that
librate about the L4 or L5 Lagrangian points within a
planet’s orbit. Mapping the distributions of possible
Earth Trojan Asteroids (ETAs) is important to guide
observational searches. Librations of ETAs may carry
the asteroids nearly the entire distance from the planet
to the L3 point on the far side of the orbit behind the
Sun. In the rotating frame, the gravitational potential
lines look like tadpoles. In this frame, tadpole orbits
occupy a half-toroid region, including either the L4 or
L5 point. The region of the sky where ETAs potentially
exist is difficult to observe due to the low Solar elongations.
The geometry also tends to have small reflection
angles, making observations even more difficult from
Earth.
