I started this project back in 2004 as I realize that more and more people get into astrophotography but most will go no further then framing nice pictures. So I thought that it will be good to have a simple to use tool to allow amateur astronomers to do plate-solving(detect and match your image against star catalogs), so they can explore and learn more about these marvelous images so I started to develop this project. Now after literally tens of thousands of development hours you can just load your astrophoto and in a few clicks learn almost everything is known about your image, what are the stars, galaxies, nebulas, radio sources, x-ray/gamma bursts, supernovas, extra solar planets or asteroids, comets and even artificial earth satellites passing through. Also, you can get more advanced information like various measurements available (including spectral) and links to articles/abstracts talking about objects and/in that area in the sky.

On top of that I added several tool to help amateur astronomer to better plan his observing session like an on click collection of environmental/weather data, instruments management/control and also an online collaboration interface to allow amateur astronomers to easily exchange/review the data.

There is something else I want to add… the project is written in c++/wxwidgets (cross platform gui library) and that means it can be compiled on other platforms such as linux/mac/etc. Most functionality will work except for the digital cameras interface (and for Mac I am not sure about the video interface either) which is for the moment is windows only. So if people are interested please let me know and I will be looking in the future to release it for Linux or Mac osX as well.

Also, my future plans with this project is to release it free and opensource (for windows, linux and perhaps macosx)… if all goes well, I mean if people show interest in it and it’s workable and from there I might be looking for sponsorship at some point to support a big central database though which amateur astronomers from all over the world can share image resolved with astrometry data etc. So maybe now you can also understand what am I doing here as well …

Anyone interested to help me test it and/or feedback will be appreciated!

ho avviato questo progetto nel 2004 quando ho capito che molti astrofili si dedicano all'astrofotografia ma molti non vanno oltre la realizzazione di una bella foto. Allora ho pensato che sarebbe stato utile avere un semplice programmino per permettere agli astrofili di determinare la posizione della porzione di cielo fotografato e di visualizzarla all'interno dei cataloghi stellari, cosi' da poter esplorare e imparare di piu' da quelle meravigliose immagini, e cosi' ho iniziato a sviluppare il progetto. Ora, dopo decine di migliaia di ore di programmazione, potete caricare le vostre astrofoto e in pochi click scoprire quasi tutto della vostra immagine, quali stelle, galassie, nebulose, sorgenti radio, lampi gamma e raggi x, supernove, pianeti extra solari e asteroidi,comete e satelliti artificiali essa contiene.
Inoltre avrete altre informazioni, vari tipi di misure (anche quelle spettrali) e links ad articoli ed abstracts riguardanti gli oggetti nell'area di cielo coperta e l'area di cielo stessa.
Ho aggiunto in alto anche altri strumenti per aiutare l'astrofilo a pianificare nel migliore dei modi le sessioni osservative, una collezione di dati climatici, controllo e gestione degli strumenti, ed anche un'interfaccia per la collaborazione on line per consentire agli astrofili di condividere facilmente i dati.

C'è altro che voglio aggiungere, il progetto è scritto in c++/wxwidggets (librerie per vari sistemi) cio' significa che puo' essere compilata su varie piattaforme (linux, mac, etc...) La maggior parte delle funzionalità sono operative per i vari sistemi eccetto che l'interfaccia per le camere digitali (e per i mac non sono sicuro nemmeno dell'interfaccia video) che va solo con windows per ora. Percio' se siete interessati datemi un feedback che vedro' di adeguarla anche per linux e mac.

Il progetto per il futuro è rilasciare il software free e opensource (per windows, linux e forse mac)... se tutto va bene e se riscontro interesse in esso e poi potrei cercare degli sponsor ad un certo punto in modo da realizzare una grosso database attraverso cui gli astrofili di tutto il mondo possano condividere immagini con dati astrometrici etc.
Potrete capire ora cosa mi aspetta.....

Hi Larry, your work seems great!
I hope I can help somehow, I'm not involved in astrophoto, but I hope I will be in a near future.
What seems more interesting to me is the platform you've choosed, c++/wxWidgets, and the ability to run on many platforms. Even more appreciated is the possibility to release the code as free software! I'm an enthusiast GNU/Linux user so I think this could be a big "plus".
Now, just a couple of questions:
- do you have a repository, or something like a CVS?
- I personally think it would be very very interesting to have a simpler language to expand your project... I'm a Python fanatic, have you ever thought an expansion in such a direction?
- If you think it could be useful, I could build up a testing machine with FreeBSD, could you be interested in?
(Ok, three questions... but... I didn't expected the Spanish Inquisition... ) (1)

Spero di poter aiutare in qualche modo, non sono coinvolto nell'astro-fotografia, ma spero di esserlo in un prossimo futuro.
Ciò che a me sembra più interessante è la piattaforma scelta, C++ / wxWidgets, e la capacità di girare su molte piattaforme. Ancora più apprezzata è la possibilità di rilasciare il codice come software libero! Sono un appassionato utente GNU/Linux quindi credo che questo potrebbe essere un grande "plus".
Ora vorrei farti un paio di domande:
- Esiste un repository, o qualcosa tipo un CVS?
- Personalmente penso che sarebbe molto molto interessante avere un linguaggio più semplice per espandere il tuo progetto... sono un fanatico di Python, hai mai pensato ad un'estensione in questa direzione?
- Se pensi che possa essere utile, potrei preparare una macchina di test con FreeBSD, potresti essere interessato?
(Ok, tre domande... ma... non mi aspettavo l'Inquisizione Spagnola ) (1)

I don’t have a repository at the moment. And I am not sure yet but I think in the end I will setup my own custom versioning control and documentation site for it – and will be latter after I get a stable alpha version.

Well, I am not after simpler… I am after better, standard with an efficient at high/low level access … and I think c/c++ does that. Anyway wxwidgets has an extention for python (wxphyton) … I wont mind extensions in any directions as long as the core of it is kept clean,standard and efficient

Beh, io non sono più semplici, dopo ... io sono meglio dopo, con uno standard efficiente ad alto / accesso a basso livello ... e penso che c / c + + che fa. Comunque wxWidgets è una estensione per Python (wxphyton) ... I wont estensioni mente in ogni direzione fino a quando il nucleo di esso è tenuto pulito, standard ed efficiente:)
